[PROGRAM] The theme of the 2026 July Festival is French music. From the polyphonic music of the medieval Notre Dame school to the 14th-century "Ars Nova," 17th-century court music culture, and the 20th century, French music has demonstrated a distinct presence in every era, creating new trends. At the starting point of contemporary French music lie Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Although they appear similar, these two composers, possessing distinct personalities, shaped the image of French music we envision today through their delicate timbres and colors, restrained elegance, and fluid rhythms. This festival offers an opportunity to encounter the numerous masterpieces of these two composers. Debussy and Ravel forged their musical worlds while passing through the "Belle Époque" and experiencing World War I and the Roaring Twenties. In this lecture, we will look back at the atmosphere and artistic environment of the eras in which they lived, offering a more vivid look into their lives and music. Going a step beyond simply listening to the works, this will be a time to naturally understand the background and sensibility behind the creation of that music. A wine party will follow the lecture.
