[PROGRAM] Who exactly were the musicians between Debussy and Messiaen? It seems there is a kind of "blank" in French music between Claude Debussy, considered the pioneer of 19th-century Impressionist composers, and Olivier Messiaen, known as the saint of 20th-century modern music. However, if you take just one step inside, a magnificent garden of music unfolds rather than a desolate ruin. There existed composers such as Erik Satie and the "French Six" (Les Six)—Francis Poulenc, Arthur Honegger, and Darius Milhaud. While it is easy to understand Satie solely as the composer of piano pieces like "Gymnopédie," which is beloved in films and advertisements, he is being re-evaluated in the modern era as a non-mainstream maverick and innovator precisely because he deliberately stepped away from mainstream conventions. Although the "French Six" possessed diverse musical colors, they shared a critical awareness regarding French music following Wagner and Debussy. A time to explore the lives and music of these composers, which must be traversed to bridge the gap between the music of Debussy and Messiaen. This will be an opportunity to view post-World War I European art from a new perspective. *The event will include a lecture, a talk with the performer, and a performance. *A wine party will follow the lecture.
