[Synopsis] In 18th-century Naples, two young officers, Guglielmo and Ferrando, boast of the unwavering fidelity of their fiancées, the sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella. In response, the cynical old philosopher Don Alfonso proposes a bet to them, stating that "a woman's heart is like a reed." Following Alfonso's plan, the two officers feign a farewell, claiming to suddenly depart for the battlefield, only to reappear soon after disguised as Albanian noblemen wearing mustaches. They begin to seduce each other's fiancées, but initially face staunch rejection from the sisters. Fiordiligi, in particular, resists the temptation by singing that her fidelity is as firm as a rock (Come scoglio). Desperate to win the bet, Alfonso enlists the help of the maid Despina to sway the sisters' hearts. As the courtship continues, the younger sister Dorabella opens her heart to the disguised Guglielmo first, and the older sister Fiordiligi eventually succumbs to Ferrando's persistent seduction. Eventually, the sisters even end up signing new marriage vows with disguised, unidentified nobles. At that moment, a military march is heard, and news arrives that their original fiancés have returned. Before the bewildered sisters, two officers remove their disguises and reveal that everything was a play. Although great confusion and guilt follow, Alfonso suggests reconciliation, stating, "This is human nature," and the play concludes with the four men and women forgiving each other and finding their original partners.
