[Concert Introduction] In the history of Western music, vocal music has largely developed into two categories: secular and religious themes. With the birth of dramatic music in the early 1600s, operas with secular themes and oratorios with religious themes developed into important genres during the Baroque period. Meanwhile, art songs evolved through the Classical and 19th-century Romantic periods, with songs in various languages—including German, French, English, and American—composed to poems on both religious and secular themes. The 74th Regular Concert of the Seoul Art Song Society features vocal music with religious themes, which occupies a significant portion of vocal literature, composed of diverse repertoire from Germany, France, England, and the United States. The first half begins with arias from Baroque composer J. S. Bach's *The St. John Passion* and Mendelssohn's oratorio *Elijah*, a work influenced by Bach and which played a significant role in popularizing his music. It then proceeds to perform in German 'Vier ernste Gesänge' (Four Serious Songs), composed by J. Brahms to the text of Proverbs, and 'Biblické písn?' (Biblical Songs), composed by Czech composer A. Dvořák to the Psalms. The second half consists of religious music in various languages, including excerpts from French composer A. Honegger's 'Le Roi David', French religious music by C. Gounod, British religious work 'Five Mystical Songs' by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and 'Cycle of Holy Songs' by American composer Ned Rorem, set to Psalms.
