[Performance Introduction] Shigeki Okubo, a drummer and composer from Kyushu, is an artist who has garnered attention for his delicate sense of rhythm and lyrical compositional world. His music naturally intertwines the improvisational nature of jazz with the refined sensibility unique to Japanese music, adding a distinctive texture to the sound of contemporary jazz trios. In this project, Okubo leads the trio's flow as the leader and musical center, delivering a profound ensemble alongside pianist Yoon-Sung Cho and bassist Chang-Min Jeon. The program weaves together film scores, jazz standards, and pieces born from diverse cultural landscapes into a single narrative, centered around Okubo's original works. The transparent lyricism of Nordic Romantic composer Edvard Grieg's Arietta, the music of Minako Matsubara showcasing the sophisticated sensibility of Japanese City Pop, and the sensual sound of contemporary Japanese music producer Tomita Lab are reinterpreted within Okubo's rhythmic imagination in a new trio language. Okubo’s drumming transcends mere rhythms that sustain time, acting as a central axis that orchestrates the flow of the music. Flexible dynamics, delicate touches, and the tension and space formed within improvisational interactions expand the trio’s sound in a more three-dimensional way. While respecting each other’s musical space, the three musicians engage in a dense dialogue, presenting the aesthetics of a contemporary jazz trio that transcends the boundaries of genre and culture. This performance takes place at ERUM Gallery, a representative performance venue in Jeonju, where the audience will experience a sophisticated musical landscape where rhythm, lyricism, and improvisation organically intersect.
